Mike Mason is an engineer and entrepreneur who founded Climate Care, one of the world’s first carbon trading businesses.
Climate Care started before the Kyoto Protocol was drafted, and pioneered many of the concepts of additionality, the avoidance of leakage, and the need for permanence in Climate Care’s voluntary offset projects.
Climate Care became one of the best recognised and trusted brands in the carbon market. It financed the world’s first carbon and cook-stove project; provided early funding support to the voluntary carbon market’s Gold Standard; established the world’s largest consumer carbon offset programme with Land Rover; and contributed funding for the Ashden Awards for Sustainable Energy (www.ashden.org). Climate Care was sold to JP Morgan in 2008. Mike remains an international judge for the Ashden Awards.
In 2010 Mike was appointed Energy Advisor to Mohammed Nasheed, President of the Maldives, and charged with making the country the world’s first carbon neutral country. Sadly a coup cut the $3Bn program short only days before its formal launch and initial funding.
Mike’s current activities and investments include Biojoule (www.biojoule.com), a startup using new anaerobic digestion technology to provide energy from agricultural waste in Africa, and YASA Motors (http://www.yasamotors.com), a high tech startup with a radically improved design for electric motors. These are 1/4th the weight and 4 times the torque density of conventional motors, and promise to transform the coming generation of electric vehicles.
